ST Paul Foundation Approves 449 Grants Totaling Nearly $4 Million
Monday, December 27th, 2004
As part of its strategic grant making plan, The Saint Paul Foundation commits 50
percent of its unrestricted funds to help the community address four goals:
creating an anti-racist community; economic development for disadvantaged
people and communities; strong families that provide healthy development for
children and youth; and quality education. As illustrated in the following examples,
grantees employ various strategies to achieve these goals.
Grant Highlights
Five grants approved by The Saint Paul Foundation are:
American Oromo Community of Minnesota, Inc.: $15,000 for Program Support
The American Oromo Community of Minnesota, located on University Avenue in
Saint Paul, was founded in 2001 to provide services to empower Oromo people to
live successfully in the United States. The Oromo are people who originated in
Oromia, the largest regional state within Ethiopia. Invasions and persecutions over
the years have forced most Oromo people to flee their country and become
nomads throughout Africa – currently, 39 million Oromo are dispersed across the
continent. Since 1994, many Oromo have immigrated to the United States as
refugees. Presently, approximately 11,000 Oromo live in the Twin Cities area. The
goal of the American Oromo Community of Minnesota is to help the Oromo people
maintain the traditions of their culture while helping them integrate into American
society. This grant will provide program support to the organization as it works to
expand services and improve financial systems and governance.
